Play is fresh, witty take on Latino history
September 18, 2007
The St. Paul theatre company Teatro del Pueblo will perform "Echoes from the New World" Sunday, Sept. 23, at 3 p.m. at the Pause Mane Stage in Buntrock Commons. The event is free and open to the public.
Straight from the Minnesota Fringe Festival, "Echoes from the New World" is the humorous tale of two Latinas who discover their grandmother's trunk. When opened, it reveals characters from Latin American history in unexpected situations -- from Christopher Columbus making his debut as a top supermodel to 18th-century troubadours dancing merengue. But the play also is a journey to the untold corners of Latin American history as seen through Latino eyes.
Audiences from the Fringe Festival performance of the play have called it "a tour-de-force of South America's history" and "a fine mix of education, imagination and artistic playfulness" with "excellent directing and neat sound design."
Sponsored by Presente, part of the St. Olaf Student Government Association, "Echoes" is one of several events planned throughout September for Latino Heritage Month.
