Matthew Young, a member of the Minnesota Orchestra viola section, will present a recital in Christansen Hall of Music, Urness Recital Hall on Tuesday, Sept. 25, at 7 p.m. His recital will include works by Hindemith, Shostakovich and Bach. The event is free and open to the public.

Young is a 2007 recipient of the McKnight Fellowship for Performing Musicians that is administrated by the MacPhail Center for Music. The McKnight Fellowship helps outstanding Minnesota musicians foster the development of their craft while providing financial support, professional development and recognition -- all the while enriching Minnesota's art culture. Before Young joined the Minnesota Orchestra in 2005, he performed with the New York String Orchestra Seminar at Carnegie Hall. Among other ensembles, Young was co-principal viola of the Cleveland Opera Orchestra, principal of the Canton (Ohio) Symphony and the prestigious Tanglewood Festival Orchestra. Young was a founding member of the Verklarte Quartet, which won grand prize in the 2003 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition.

Young completed his music degree at the Cleveland Institute of Music. In accordance with McKnight Fellowship guidelines, Young will continue his studies at the University of Kentucky and the Yale School of Music while performing with the Minnesota Orchestra.
