California paper profiles composing alumnus

"Improvisation is important for composing music. Composition is improvisation written down on a line of music notation," Blaise Douros '07 recently told The Union, one of California's oldest newspapers. The paper calls the recent St. Olaf graduate "a composer with all the skills he needs to launch his career."

"I'd like to promote or just encourage an environment where young composers like me can take some lessons, get together in a slightly formal capacity and have some constructive criticism to talk about where their music is going," said Douros. "The ultimate goal is to educate composers who have less experience."
