Activist Gloria Andina to speak on free trade
April 24, 2007
Holland Hall, 501 4 p.m.
Activist Gloria Andina will address free trade, immigration, and bottom up resistance, particularly as they apply to her home town El Regadio, Nicaragua, as a part of her Witness for Peace, "Roots of Migration" Tour.
Andina has spent more than 15 years organizing local resistance programs in an ongoing struggle for justice locally and internationally. In her speech, she will talk about her experiences of resisting U.S. military policies in the 1980's and her current struggles against U.S. economic policy. She will also address the role of Free Trade in Latin America, why so many people immigrate to the US, and the impacts of these issues on women and rural communities.
Andina is currently the head of the male-dominated Small Farmer Association, "La Union," and she is a board member of the National Union of Farmers and Ranchers of Nicaragua. A leader in a women's organizing group, Adina leads training sessions and lectures on food security, female identity, marginalization of women, and women's rights.
St. Olaf Peace and Justice, Presente!, and Global Citizenship welcome Andina as a part of Viva La Raza Weeks on campus.
