| The St. Olaf Men's Cycling team led the pack in the Starleton Road Race, which was co-hosted by St. Olaf and Carleton College's Cycling Clubs and held in Northfield and Minnetonka, MN. |
The men's team won the road race and criterium by placing three riders in the top 10 of each event. The women's team placed third in the team time trial. The road race and team trial took place just outside Northfield on April 14, and the criterium was held at Opus Industrial Park in Minnetonka, Minn., on April 15.
St. Olaf students Brandon Krawczyk '09 and Finn Kolsrud '07 placed third and fourth, respectively, in the 52-mile road race. Jake Boyce '08 took second in the "A" criterium and Kyle Chezik '09 took third in the "B" criterium. The third place St. Olaf women's time trial consisted of Bria Schurke '08, Caitlin Marine '10 and Erin Fulton '09.
The St. Olaf Cycling Team has gone from a group of primarily recreational riders to an elite team that is competitive with larger schools. "We are doing this with a small amount of funding and no coach," says Kolsrud, a sociology/anthropology major. The team is sponsored by Cannon Falls' Thousand Hills Cattle Company, owned by Todd Churchill '93.
Teams competing in last weekend's event were part of the North Central Collegiate Conference that includes Division I teams such as Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Minnesota and Nebraska, as well as such Division II teams as Carleton.
With their strong showing this season, both the St. Olaf Men's and Women's Cycling teams are well on their way to qualifying for the U.S.A. Cycling Collegiate Road Nationals in Lawrence, Kan., in May.
