Renowned opera singer to perform at St. Olaf
October 2, 2006
Renowned soprano Cynthia Lawrence will be performing Monday, Oct. 2, at St. Olaf College. The program for the evening includes pieces by Richard Strauss and Erich Wolfgang Korngold, along with arias by Verdi and Mozart. The public is invited to attend the performance at 7 p.m. in Urness Recital Hall.
Lawrence is a regular guest of leading opera companies around the world, including the Metropolitan Opera, Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin, the New Israeli Opera and Opera Paris. During the past several seasons she has performed a number of roles at the Metropolitan Opera.
In addition to many notable performances, Cynthia most recently worked with two Hollywood greats: director Anthony Minghella (The Talented Mr. Ripley) on the much anticipated new Madame Butterfly production at the Met, and director John DeLancey in an exciting production of Tosca with the Atlanta Opera. Both productions were highly acclaimed and well received.
Lawrence first attracted international attention in 1990 when she won the International Concorso di Canto di Mozart Vocal competition. Her many awards include being a Metropolitan Opera National Finalist, receiving the Birgit Nilsson Prize and placing first in the Metropolitan Opera Rocky Mountain Region. She also has received recognition from the Denver Lyric Opera Guild, the Society of Arts and Letters, Allied Arts Voice, the MacAllister Awards, the Stewart Awards and the Pavarotti International competitions.
Lawrence appears frequently in concert with longtime colleague Luciano Pavarotti. She has appeared with him in several televised broadcasts on PBS, including "Pavarotti Plus!" in 1989 and the 1995 PBS special "Pavarotti: My World."
Lawrence's husband, Mark Calkins, teaches voice at St. Olaf.
