Amber Collett '07 of Bettendorf, Iowa, has been selected by the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE) to receive an academic scholarship in recognition of her superior accomplishments in environmental education.

Collett is majoring in environmental studies and Russian and Central European studies. She is one of two student naturalists selected by the Environmental Studies Program for 2006-07 and serves as a co-leader for the Environmental Coalition, a student-run organization that practices environmental advocacy. She also is program director for the student-run Volunteer Network that provides students with opportunities to participate in field trips, winter tracking, tree plantings and other natural restoration activities. Collett has a longtime passion for environmental preservation and credits St. Olaf with giving her a solid background in environmental education.

"My work as an intern for the Alaska Coalition, my involvement in St. Olaf's Environmental Coalition, and my position as a student naturalist all contribute to my interest in environmental education," she says, "but it really started before all of that, when I was a child and would go for walks with my father who is an environmental educator. He taught me a new way to interpret the world around me, which I was then able to take to the next step at St. Olaf."

Collett will be recognized at an awards ceremony on Oct. 13, during the NAEE International Conference on Oct. 10-14 in St. Paul, MN. The North American Association for Environmental Education is a network of professionals, students and volunteers working in the field of environmental education throughout North America and in more than 55 countries around the world.
