Theater season begins with two Sam Shepard plays

The St. Olaf College Theatre kicks off its 2006-07 theatrical season with two plays, Action and Cowboy Mouth, written by Sam Shepard and directed by Jeanne Willcoxon. Performances will be Oct. 4-7, at 7:30 p.m., and Oct. 7-8 at 2 p.m., in the Ralph Haugen Theater Building.

Shepard wrote both one-act plays in the early 1970s. He features characters trapped in realities they are unable to change, where the only escape is through imagination. The plays explore the psychology of the abandoned and how they search to ways to survive in the face of society's extreme indifference.

Director Willcoxon, who earned her undergraduate degree from Harvard University, completed her doctorate at the University of Minnesota, where she has been teaching since 2004. She currently is a Visiting Instructor in Theatre at St. Olaf.

The cast features Ceara Madson '07, Elizabeth Morgan '10, Tim Otte '10, Nick Sahli '07, Hannah Sorenson '10, Molly Trucano '10 and Josh Vogen '07. Costume design for Action and Cowboy Mouth is by resident St. Olaf costume designer Aimee Jillson, with set design by Kyle Carlson '08, Colin Christie '07, Kira Nehmer '07 and Nick Sahli '07.

Tickets, $8, are available by calling the St. Olaf box office at 507-646-8987. Both plays contain strong adult language and may not be suitable for children.
