Unique sound of Pastiche to be heard at St. Olaf

| Members of the unique Pastiche quartet are: (l-r) Fred Sahlmann, piano; David Scott, trumpet; Jan Fillmore Scott, clarinet; and Lonny Benoit, percussion. |
In a review of the ensemble, Norman E. Smith, author of Band Music Notes, writes, "The spectacular musical performance by Pastiche ranks with the best solo and ensemble concerts I have ever heard in this country."
"They have an interesting, non-standard instrumental combination," says Marty Hodel, Associate Professor of Music at St. Olaf. "So essentially they've had to commission world-class composers to write their repertoire--pretty much a who's who list of contemporary composers, such as Robert Ward and Don Freund." They're all world-class musicians and they've been playing together for a long time, he adds, making them "unusually good."
Pastiche has been acclaimed internationally for its intriguing programming and creative interplay between its members. Since its creation in 1995 the group has blended an array of styles to create its own distinctive sound--ranging from the Baroque to works by Pulitzer Prize-winning composers. The recipient of many performance and commissioning endowments, Pastiche records with INNOVA and Centaur records.
