Alumni panel to discuss careers in music

By Tom Vogel
May 12, 2006

"Entrepreneurs in Music," an alumni panel, will be held Sunday, May 14, at 4 p.m. in Christiansen Hall of Music, Fosnes Choral Room. The event is free and open to the public.

The panel will provide students with various perspectives on options in the field of music that are available to them following graduation, particularly in the area of self-employment. Joey Kantor '07, will moderate the panel of four accomplished musical alumni: Eric Fawcett '92, musician in the bands Spymob and N*E*R*D; Jocelyn Hagen '03, composer and president of Graphite Publishing; J. Matt Keil '97, former music distributor for Sony and band manager and current sales marketing representative for Fischer Edit; and David Weeks '93, owner and CEO of Peppermint Records.

Kantor, a jazz piano performance major, says that the event is designed to give St. Olaf students ideas for what to do in music beyond performing and teaching. He says that the diverse panel -- ranging from performers and composers to managers to producers -- is united in the way they have combined their interests and education with their love of music. "They show all the things you can do in the world with music and the success that can be achieved between business and music," Kantor says.
