St. Olaf College is the only liberal arts college to have been chosen to host the 2006 Midwest Japanese Film Festival, organized by the Japan Foundation. Each Tuesday in February at 7 p.m., the college will present one of four recently released Japanese films at Southgate Cinema in Northfield (507-663-7732): Go, directed by Isao Yukisada; Nobody Knows, directed by Hirokazu Koreieda; Bright Future, directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa; and Face, directed by Junji Sakamoto. The festival, which is open to the public, is free of charge.

"This is a great opportunity to introduce contemporary Japan through films," says Assistant Professor of Japanese Rika Ito, who organized the event. "The films we'll show were made within last several years and they go beyond the stereotypical Japan that's depicted in Memoires of a Geisha, The Last Samurai and Salary Men."
