St. Olaf Magazine wins big at annual MMPA awards

St. Olaf Magazine won four awards in November at the 2005 MMPA Excellence Awards in Minneapolis, sponsored annually by the Minnesota Magazine & Publications Association.

The college magazine competed in the category of "General Interest," under 60,000 circulation.

Under the leadership of Editor Carole Leigh Engblom and Art Director Don Bratland '87, the magazine won three gold awards and one silver award:
* Gold for overall excellence;
* Gold for best overall design;
* Gold for best single-topic issue, "The Norway Issue" (May 2005);
* Silver for best special section for "Alumni World," which was edited last year by Communications Specialist David Gonnerman '90 and designed by Mike Mihelich '82 and Amber Kidder '99.

Judges called the magazine "a brilliant package" in their comments for the Overall Excellence award. "The editorial is imaginative and well-constructed," they said. "The design ignores formula, focusing instead on finding fresh and appealing delivery. Almost makes us envy St. Olaf grads!"

Understandably, editor Carole Engblom is pleased. "St. Olaf Magazine is a collaborative effort, and the awards are a wonderful affirmation," she says. "This is a big win for St. Olaf College."

Produced by the St. Olaf Office of Marketing Communications, St. Olaf Magazine is mailed three times a year to alumni around the world and to the parents of current students.
