Minneapolis resident and former St. Olaf Orchestra member Jocelyn Hagen '03 has won the Minneapolis-based VocalEssence 2005 Welcome Christmas! Carol Contest for her composition "See Amid the Winter Snow." Hagen also has received awards from the San Francisco Composition Competition (student division) and the Yale Glee Club Emerging Composer Competition.

With a bachelor's degree in vocal music education and theory and composition, Hagen continues to compose for a variety of genres and, at 25, is the youngest composer to win the VocalEssence contest. Hagen has studied at Juilliard and at the University of Minnesota. She also has completed the composition program at the European American Musical Alliance in Paris and finished her composer-in-the-schools residency through the American Composers Forum.
