Pokhanovski brothers to perform string recital

Brothers Oleg Pokhanovski, violin, and Mikhail Pokhanovski, viola, will perform on Tuesday, Oct. 11, at 8:15 p.m. in Urness Recital Hall at St. Olaf. The program will include works by Bach, Mozart, Hayden, Scarlatti, Paganini and Wieniawski. The concert is free and open to the public.

Oleg Pokhanovski
Oleg began his career at age 6. His first teacher was his uncle, Lev Zaides, whose teaching made it possible for Oleg to be accepted into the Special Music School for Gifted Children in Moscow at age 10. He subsequently studied at the Moscow State Conservatory and eventually received scholarships to study in the United States at Julliard and the Manhattan School. He completed his doctorate of music in performance at the University of Montreal.

Oleg is a laureate of numerous prestigious competitions, including the Wieniawski International in Poland, the Paganini International in Italy (2nd prize), the Sarasate International in Spain and the Montreal International. He also won the 1990 Scheveningen International Violin Competition and was a recipient of a Canada Council National Award for professional artists. Oleg has taught at Lake Superior State University in Michigan and for the past three years he has taught violin and chamber music at the University of Manitoba.

Mikhail Pochanovski
Mikhail Pokhanovski began his musical studies at age 5, also under the tutelage of Zaides. After studying at the Central Music School for Gifted Children in Moscow he entered the State Moscow conservatory, graduating with honors in 1990. In 1988 he toured with the first Russian-American orchestra and for the following two years he was a member of the USSR State Symphony Orchestra.

From 1992 to 1997 Mikhail was principal violist in the Jeunesse Musicale and the McGill Chamber Orchestra in Montreal and a member of the Joachim Quartet, which performed numerous concerts and Canadian Broadcasting Corporation broadcasts. He was artist-in-residence at Lake Superior State University in Michigan before joining the faculty of the University of Manitoba as a sectional violin instructor in 2004.
