Kleber-Gery Lecture addresses the economics of renewable resources

By Anthony Becker
October 24, 2005

Professor Colin Clark of the University of British Columbia will be on the St. Olaf College campus to present this year's Kleber-Gery Lectures. Clark's lectures will focus on economics of renewable resources, a topic central to the discussion of sustainability, the college's theme for this academic year. On Oct. 27, at 7 p.m., Clark will speak on "The Economics of Renewable Resources: An Introduction" and on Oct. 28, at 4 p.m., he will present "The Worldwide Crisis in Fisheries: The Use and Misuse of Models." Both lectures, free and open to the public, will be held in Holland Hall, room 501.

Clark's October 27 talk is intended for general audiences and will introduce the basic tenets of renewable resource economics. On October 28, he will present a more technical discussion of the use of mathematical economic models in the management of ocean fisheries. This second talk is the subject of his forthcoming book due in 2006.

Clark's research is in behavioral ecology and economics of natural resources where dynamic optimization models arise prominently. He collaborates in model construction and use with biologists, and has frequently taught courses to graduate students in biology. His several books in the above fields are standard reference and teaching texts. Vice President Al Gore, in his book Earth in the Balance, cites Clark's work in resource economics. His writings have spanned areas from mathematical dynamics to foraging theory to species extinction. He is the author of numerous scholarly articles and several books, including Bioeconomic Modeling and Fisheries Management (1985) and Mathematical Bioeconomics (1990).

Clark's visit is made possible by generous contributions by an alumnus of the college to the Kleber-Gery Lecture fund. The lecture series was named in honor of St. Olaf professors emeriti Richard Kleber (Mathematics) and Frank Gery (Economics), both of Northfield.
