Sixteen-handed 'Monster' concert features faculty pianists
October 25, 2005
St. Olaf College invites the public to a kid-friendly "Halloween treat" piano recital that will feature eight costumed pianists playing four pianos in a performance on Thursday, Oct. 27, at 11:30 a.m. in Urness Recital Hall at St. Olaf. Admission is free. Treats will be distributed at the door.
The eight pianists, all members of the St. Olaf music faculty, are Kathryn Ananda-Owens, Christopher Atzinger, Julia Elkina, John Jensen, Kent McWilliams, Nancy Paddleford, Lori Ronning Folland and David Viscoli. Music faculty colleague Timothy Mahr will conduct the ensemble. Selections will include works by Rachmaninov, Liszt and Joplin, plus a rousing rendition of John Philip Sousa's "The Stars and Stripes Forever."
The performance also will feature the world premiere of "Hive," a piano composition by new music faculty member Justin Merritt. The piece, which depicts a swarm of killer bees through a range of special effects such as strumming and stamping, was written especially for the performance.
