St. Olaf to sponsor women-oriented Internet radio show hosted by Distinguished Alum
September 15, 2005
St. Olaf has signed on as a major sponsor of "Women on the Move," the Internet radio talk show hosted by St. Olaf alumna and former Minnesota State Senator Ember Reichgott Junge, a 1974 graduate of the college.
"'Women on the Move' has attracted the kind of audience with which St. Olaf College wants to share its gifts and messages," McDaniel said. "As a St. Olaf graduate, Ember Reichgott Junge is an excellent partner in helping the college broaden its audience. The college is excited to be able to take part in choosing interview subjects and topics for this groundbreaking program."
"Women on the Move," which debuted in February, focuses on women's leadership and issues that directly concern women. Past shows have covered topics such as education, gambling and stem cell research. Past guests have included women governors, Pulitzer prize-winning journalists, and military leaders.
"When women leaders stand alongside male leaders, the conversation changes," Reichgott Junge stated in a speech at St. Olaf last March to celebrate Women's History Month. "We can't move forward as a society with only half of the voices."
"Women on the Move" is produced live on VoiceAmerica.com every Thursday from 1-2 p.m. Central time, and past shows are also available on demand. "Podcasts" -- downloadable versions of the show that play on iPods and MP3 players -- are available at the VoiceAmerica website. By utilizing podcasting, which is wildly popular among teens and college students, Reichgott Junge hopes to encourage the next generation of women leaders to engage in a new conversation about women's issues.
"My love of politics started at St. Olaf College," said Reichgott Junge. She spent the Interim of her senior year interning in the Washington, D.C., office of then-U.S. Sen. Walter Mondale. "It changed my direction in life," she said.
Called an "outstanding legislator" by the Star Tribune in Minneapolis, Reichgott Junge stepped down in 2000 from the Minnesota Senate after 18 years of service. A former senate assistant majority leader, she championed education issues and the prevention of domestic violence, child abuse and sexual assault.
A graduate of Duke University Law School (1977) with an MBA from the University of St. Thomas (1991), Reichgott Junge currently serves business and nonprofit organizations as an attorney and communications consultant with The General Counsel, Ltd. Reichgott Junge was named a Distinguished Alumna of St. Olaf College in 1998.
