University of Chicago professor Jonathan Lear will speak on "Ethics and the Collapse of Civilization" as part of St. Olaf College's Eunice Belgum Lectures Series. Lear will present two lectures in room 501 of Holland Hall on the St. Olaf campus. The first lecture, "After That, Nothing Happened," will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. Lear's second lecture, "Living at the Abyss," will be on Thursday, Sept. 22 at 3:45 p.m.

Lear is the University of Chicago's John U. Nef Distinguished Service Professor in the Committee on Social Thought and in the Department of Philosophy. His primary study is philosophical conceptions of the human psyche from Socrates to the present day. He has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association and the International Journal of Psychoanalysis.

Lear has lectured at Cambridge University and Trinity College, Dublin. He is a two-time winner of the Gradiva Award for Best Psychoanalytic Book. He also has published articles in The New Republic and The New York Times Book Review.

This is the 27th year of the Belgum Lectures that honor the memory of the late Eunice Belgum, who graduated from St. Olaf College in 1967. While the lectures may be on any topic, the philosophy department makes a special effort to choose topics in areas that were of special interest to Belgum: ethics, philosophy of mind and feminism. The lectures are supported by a fund established by Belgum's family and friends.
