St. Olaf and Carleton to co-host Service Learning and Academic Civic Engagement Summit
May 6, 2005
A Service Learning and Academic Civic Engagement Summit co-hosted by St. Olaf and Carleton Colleges will be held May 5 to May 7. Two keynote addresses on Friday will be offered by author Don Frick, local biographer of the late servant leadership pioneer Robert Greenleaf at 1 p.m. and by Minnesota State Representative Ruth Johnson of District 23A (Mankato) speaking on "Working for Peace, Justice and Sustainability," at 7:30 p.m.
Service learning engages students in service within the community as an integrated aspect of their coursework. Three local organizations that are active in service learning and civic engagement partnerships to be visited on Saturday include Ruth's House, a transitional housing for women and children; the River Bend Nature Center, a community center for environmental education and research; and the Northfield Community Action Center.
