Former Congressman Penny to debate political science professor Hofrenning on Social Security

By Sandra Gilderhus
April 22, 2005

A debate about Social Security between Dan Hofrenning, professor of political science, and former U.S. Congressman Tim Penny, now a fellow at the Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs, will take place in the Valhalla Room in Buntrock Commons at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

The title of the debate is "Does Bush's Plan Work?" Hofrenning has published several opinion pieces on Social Security in the Star Tribune which take the president to task for citing "ominous trends" in a system that is solvent, Hofrenning claims.

President Bush mentioned Penny in his 2004 State of the Union address, saying, "Former Congressman Tim Penny has raised the possibility of indexing benefits to prices rather than wages."

The debate is free and open to the public.
