Roman comedy Curculio "The Weevil" to be presented at St. Olaf
March 11, 2005
St. Olaf Classics students will perform the ancient Roman comedy Curculio (The Weevil) by Plautus at 7:30 p.m. March 11-12, in Christiansen Hall of Music, room 233. The play, a musical mixture of Latin and English runs about 60-70 minutes, can be enjoyed without any knowledge of Latin.
Based on an unknown Greek model, "The Curculio" takes place in Epidaurus, Greece, near the famous sanctuary of Asklepios. A penniless young man named Phaedromus is madly in love with the slave-girl next door. Thanks to the efforts of a crafy parasite named Curculio (Weevil) and to an unexpected discovery, he is able to marry his sweetheart and everyone lives happily ever after. Free and open to the public; suitable for all ages.
