World Wide Service Fair offers domestic, international service opportunities

Oles who pursue lives of service seem born with an inordinate amount of patience and a sense of adventure, an ability to adapt to new places, new people, and new ways of living. They are leaders in giving. St. Olaf graduates historically "use the skills and knowledge acquired at St. Olaf to make a difference in the day-to-day lives of men, women and children around the globe," Mark D. Gearan, former director of the Peace Corps, once observed.

The objective of the World Wide Service Fair on Feb. 18 is two-fold. One is to give direction and information to students who are interested in pursuing a career in service after graduation, and the other is to offer opportunities to those interested in volunteer work.

The fair brings to campus representatives from 20 international and domestic service organizations, from the Peace Corps and Lutheran Volunteer Corps to the Red Cross and Salvation Army. It is co-sponsored by the Office of International and Off-Campus Studies and the Office of Servant Leadership, and is part of the college's Globalization Week (Feb. 14-19)events which also includes the fourth annual Globalization and Social Responsibility conference.

Booths will be set up in Buntrock Commons Crossroads and representatives from the service organizations will be available to speak with students, staff and faculty from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
