St. Olaf colloquium Winter Will Power!, Feb. 26-27, celebrates Shakespeare's legacy
February 17, 2005
St. Olaf College will host an undergraduate Shakespeare Colloquium, the fourth annual Winter Will Power! Feb. 26-27. The conference of undergraduate writing and performance will celebrate Shakespeare's legacy through presentations by faculty and students from St. Olaf as well as Carleton, Gustavus Adolphus and Augsburg colleges and the University of Minnesota.
"The conference is designed to showcase students work and bridge interdisciplinary boundaries between English and theater," says Karen Marsalek, assistant professor of English at St. Olaf and this year's organizer.
The base cost of the event is $5, and includes a lunch reservation for all participants with speaker Joel Sass, director of the Guthrie Theater's Pericles, on the 26th in the Valhalla Room in St. Olaf's Buntrock Commons. To attend the luncheon, register by Feb. 22 either online or contact willpower@stolaf.edu (St. Olaf Assistant Professor of English Mary Trull). Last minute registration will be available for most events.
Much of the conference takes place in R?lvaag Library, rooms 525 and 515, and the Valhalla Room of Buntrock Commons. Events include panel presentations of students essays, workshops and master classes. Other features include a workshop on teaching Shakespeare through Performance, led by high school teacher Martha Harris, and a master class in performing Shakespeare to be taught by Minneapolis actor and director Doug Scholz-Carlson, a 1990 graduate of St. Olaf.
There will also be a one-hour production of As You Like It presented by the Smaller Shakespeare Company (SSC), directed by St. Olaf senior Lauren McClain of Lakewood, Ohio. The SSC is made up of Northfield 4th through 6th grade students.
