St. Olaf names athletic complex after longtime coach

St. Olaf College has named the athletic complex on the east side of its campus after longtime coach Ade Christenson. The ceremony was held during the halftime of its home football season opener vs. Augsburg College on Sept. 21. A standout student-athlete while at St. Olaf, Christenson returned to campus five years after his 1922 graduation and, over the course of a 38-year career, coached, taught and directed athletics and intramural programs, leading the Oles to six Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football championships. More important to Christenson than his win/loss records, however, was his perspective on the balanced role athletics should play in a Christian liberal arts education, a subject upon which he expounded in his acclaimed book, Verdict of the Scoreboard. The complex that will carry his name includes Manitou Fieldhouse and the football field and track-and-field facilities of Manitou Field.
