Recipients of annual Alumni Awards announced

On behalf of the Alumni Board and the St. Olaf Board of Regents, the Office of Alumni and Parent Relations is pleased to announce the 2008 recipients of the annual Alumni Awards.

The Distinguished Alumni Award honors alumni who not only excel in their professional accomplishments, community service, church involvement and St. Olaf involvement, but who have used their talents to benefit the community. The Alumni Achievement Award honors alumni who have excelled in their professions through unusual success, innovation or research that has advanced the profession, or for extraordinary contributions that have improved the quality of life for some segment of society. The Distinguished Service Award honors alumni who have distinguished themselves in a life-long pursuit to serve, choosing to make community, religious, and/or St. Olaf involvement a priority in his/her life.

A. Malcolm "Mac" Gimse '58
Artist, Professor Emeritus of Art
Gimse is an internationally recognized sculptor with pieces in museums and exhibits around the world. He is a professor dedicated to teaching on many International and Off-Campus Studies programs with students and alumni, and he is an influential and often presented faculty member. He has done extensive work with congregations around the country, St. Olaf Study Travel programs and local community organizations.

Mark Dimunation '74
Chief, Rare Book and Special Collections Division at the Library of Congress
Dimunation is responsible for the development and management of the country's most important collection of rare books. He is a noted scholar on 18th and 19th century printing and one of the foremost experts on book collections.

Jane Leland Iverson '70

Founder and Music Director, Cheyenne Chamber Singers
Leland Iverson is a three-time winner of the Teaching Excellence Award for Arts and Humanities Division for her role as coordinator of music at Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne, Wyo. She is founder of the highly regarded Cheyenne Chamber Singers and the annual Cheyenne Christmas Choral Festival, which features 300 singers that she directs and is broadcast on Wyoming Public Television.

Foreign Language Educator, Consultant
President of the American Council on Teaching Foreign Languages, Sandrock is a nationally recognized expert and presenter on foreign language curriculum development. He is a former World Languages Consultant for Wisconsin and is a current leader in the American Diploma Project/Partnership for the 21st Century Skills initiative.

Community and congregation leader, Middle East educator
A key community leader, Froiland Hansen is known for her exceptional service to the congregation that her husband, Erling Hansen, led in West Allis, Wis. She built important ecumenical relationships throughout the community to organize people of faith in orchestral and choral music. She is currently a facilitator of Middle East programs and educational summits that serve the St. Olaf, Northfield and greater communities.

Community leader, St. Olaf volunteer
Gerber Hiddleson is a nationally recognized leader of Alpha Delta Kappa, an honorary society for female educators in Des Moines that serves communities by emphasizing altruism and understanding. She is known throughout the St. Olaf community as one of the college's key volunteers, who for nearly 50 years has served the college as a Class Fund Agent, Alumni Board member, reunion volunteer and club events chair.

David L. Brye '60

International Education Consultant
A resident of Puebla, Mexico, Brye has served the communities in his area by bringing educational resources and opportunities to both his fellow citizens and travelers to the area. He is past president of the Association for Academic Programs in Latin America and the Caribbean and is a frequent program coordinator for other institutions. Brye is a consistent volunteer with the St. Olaf Social Work program that annually visits Mexico; he also served the college as a key contact during the St. Olaf Band's international tour.
