Cecilia Noecker '12 has been selected for the highly competitive Research Experience for Undergraduates program at the National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis (NIMBioS).

Noecker, a biology major with a concentration in statistics, will spend eight weeks this summer at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville participating in the program. The National Science Foundation sponsors the initiative in an effort to foster interdisciplinary research between mathematical and biological sciences.

The Research Experiences for Undergraduates program includes 16 undergraduate students and one high school science teacher. Participants live on campus and work in teams with NIMBioS postdoctoral researchers and University of Tennessee faculty. The six research projects for the 2011 program are: modeling feral cat populations, modeling E. coli in cattle, investigating the maternal investment in the offspring of bird species, modeling intracellular movements in plants, modeling the effect of essential oils on a bio-control fungus, and modeling the early dynamics of simian immunodeficiency virus.
