Three singers from St. Olaf College placed in this year's National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Minnesota Fall Auditions.

Emily Nyberg '16 and Charlie Baird '16 each took third place in their respective divisions. Jaime Marshall '14 took fourth in his division. Zachary Jackson '14 also advanced out of preliminary rounds and finished as a semifinalist.

"NATS is the professional organization for teachers of voice, voice-related professions, and professional singers," says St. Olaf Associate Professor of Music and Department Chair Alison Feldt.

Each participant prepares three songs for the competition. They sing all three pieces in the preliminary round and semifinal round, but choose only one to sing for the finals. Singers in the student contest are judged by state chapter members, who offer written critiques for improvement in addition to a ranking.

NATS has more than 7,300 members worldwide and is represented in 27 countries. The organization strives to better music education and increase opportunities for professional vocalists and teachers. The association also produces the Journal of Singing, a scholarly publication dedicated to all aspects of singing and the teaching of singing.

Eight St. Olaf vocalists took part in this year's contest. Additional participants were Greta Shull '15, Danielle Long '16, Maria Coyne '15, and Ryan Coopergard '15.
