Northern Boundary Section Meeting Minutes
The annual meeting of the U.S.I.T.T. Northern Boundary Section Fall conference at the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, IA was called to order by Section Chair Rooth Varland at 7:30 pm Friday, September 12, 2008.
Introductions
As is customary, Chapter officers and members-at-large were introduced to the general membership. Immediately following, general introductions were given all around.
Reports
Secretary. A motion was made, seconded to approve minutes from the national conference in Houston as printed in the NBS newsletter. The motion carried and the minutes were approved.
Treasurer. Chapter Vice Chair of Publications, Brian Bjorklund, gave the treasurer's report. The report stated that NBS has a balance of $2,700.00.
Webmaster. Webmaster/Member-at-large Southwest, Cory Shelsta, shared news of recent revisions and updates to the section website. Among recent additions is a new page with links to job opportunities. He encouraged members to forward production photos and/or links to photos in order that members could see and share what's happening around the section.
Vice Chair of Publications, Brian Bjorklund, reported on recent concerns about the format and cost of our newsletter. Discussion followed with regard to changing the size of the newsletter in order to save money. Our current format costs approximately $1 per copy to mail and a new smaller format would be approximately 70 cents each, thus saving about 30 cents per newsletter. Discussion about the change brought up questions of how advertisers would feel about the reduction of their ad size and how that might impact ad revenue. Also, there was discussion of making the newsletter available in electronic format to save costs. Some members liked this idea and others preferred keeping the print format. Suggestions were made to make the format an option that members could choose on the membership form. No action was taken. Brian will talk to our advertisers first to find out what they think about possible changes.
Planning
The Vice Chair of Programming position is vacant for one year and Jasscena Hasliet volunteered to fill this position for the remaining term. Her main focus will be the NBS workshop next fall.
The section also needed to find a Member-at-Large for the Metro area. Todd Reemtsma from JTH Lighting volunteered to fill this position.
The section was in need of two scholarship readers for the 5 scholarships the NBS offers student members. UNI's Amy Rohrberg and Leonard Curtis volunteered to read applications in addition to our committee member Sheila Tabaka. Section Chair Rooth Varland suggested that the form be made available as a pdf on the section website and Corey agreed. Students were encouraged to apply and Ruth explained there were 5 cash scholarships and gave information regarding deadlines. The 5 - $500 scholarships are: Stage Technology, SECOA, NBS, Donut, and Gene Montgomery.
Announcements
The upcoming rigging seminar by Bill Sapsis of Sapsis Rigging was announced. It is being held at the College of St. Benedict in ST. Joseph, MN on Oct 2, 2008.
The meeting was adjourned and followed by an informal session in which members shared digital images of their recent work.
Respectfully submitted,
Peter Lerohl, Section Secretary.
