Abstract | Signal the attention of potential readers who may have an interest in the paper. | Indicate the paper topic and findings, including significance, and mention relevant issues or methods that arise in the paper. | Brief, summary, succinct, with hints. May concisely describe, but doesn't explain. |
Introduction | Present the topic of the paper and its general context. | Characterize the context of the problem area; introduce the paper topic; point out significance of the topic and/or its context; perhaps summarize rationale for the paper; (often) indicate the structure of the paper. | Inviting the reader, addressing the reader from his/her particular interests and drawing them towards the issues of the paper. |
Conclusion | List findings of the paper and indicate their significance. | Clearly summarize the results presented in the paper; briefly discuss their significance in their context(s); indicate future work or remaining questions. | Businesslike, matter-of-fact, direct, establishing closure. |
