Brett DeFries ('08) specializes in Renaissance poetry, poetics, and creative writing. Secondary interests include literary theory, philosophy, and literary translation. He received his PhD in English Literature from the University of Iowa in 2018 and an MFA in Creative Writing (poetry) from the University of Montana in 2011. His article "'Whatsoever being': Agamben, Donne, and Lovability" appeared in ELH in 2018, and his article "Love, Capacity, and Traherne's Idea of the Book" will appear in SEL: Studies in English Literature (1500-1900) in 2021. A 2022-2023 Fulbright Scholar to Brazil, he is currently at work with Lucas Lazzaretti (former St. Olaf Kierkegaard Scholar) on translations from the Portuguese of the Brazilian Modernist poet Murilo Mendes.
