Xai joined the Smith Center in 2025 after nine years living in Japan, where he worked for four years as a prefectural high school teacher of English and world issues and for five years as a college professor in geology and chemistry. In addition to teaching, he supported the integration of incoming international educators, developed new bilingual courses and teaching approaches, and helped establish partnerships and study abroad opportunities for Japanese students.

Xai studied Geology and Geochemistry at the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire and Northern Illinois University. Alongside the natural sciences, he also has academic backgrounds in science literacy, education, and increasing access to STEM fields for underrepresented communities. His academic interests span the natural sciences, philosophy and religion, race and ethnic studies, and international relations.

At the Smith Center, his primary responsibilities include coordinating faculty-led J-term programs and managing external program partnerships. Outside of work, Xai enjoys outdoor activities such as running and hiking, as well as photography and jigsaw puzzles.
