Xai is a new member of the Smith Center, starting in early 2025. His primary responsibilities include short-term programs and managing finances.

He holds a B.S. and an M.S. in geosciences from the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire and Northern Illinois University, respectively. In his studies, Xai combined hard sciences with the social sciences. His areas of focus included geochemistry, science literacy, education, and the representation of minority groups in the sciences.

Following the completion of his M.S., Xai moved to Japan to teach English through the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program. Over four years, he taught English and global issues at local schools and facilitated the onboarding and managing of international teachers. He then transitioned to new roles at the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Oyama College, where he spent five years as both an Assistant Professor, teaching geosciences, ecosystems, and chemistry, and as the Assistant Director of International Affairs. In these roles, he helped globalize the school through new bilingual courses, building relationship with international institutions, and creating new study abroad programs. He managed international programs, particularly in Malaysia, Thailand, and Australia.

Outside of work, Xai enjoys running, hiking, photography, and just about any other outdoor activity.
