Katie joined the Piper Center in January of 2018, having previously served as a Pre-Health Advisor at the University of Oklahoma. At St. Olaf, Katie is thrilled to support all pre-health and pre-law students and recent graduates on a variety of career paths as they develop into future professionals. With her background in clinical social work, Katie is particularly interested in working with students and recent alumni holistically, getting to know who they truly are so that she can best support them on their paths.
As the pre-health coach, Katie works closely with members of the St. Olaf Health Professions Committee, which is comprised of faculty from the sciences and mathematics, and is chaired by Dr. Kevin Crisp from the Biology Department. Together, Dr. Crisp and Katie provide support and advising to students on both the academic (Dr. Crisp) and experiential (Katie) requirements for admission to graduate health programs. In her role at the Piper Center, Katie helps manage a range of pre-law internships, pre-health internships, and shadowing opportunities, and she is excited to partner with alumni, parents, and others in the community to create new internships, identify research opportunities, and build strong shadowing programs for St. Olaf students.
A member of the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (NAAHP) and the Central Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (CAAHP), Katie has presented at national and regional conferences. Katie is also a member of the Pre-Law Advisors National Council (PLANC) and the Midwest Association of Pre-Law Advisors (MAPLA). She maintains active membership in these organizations in order to stay current on best practices in pre-professional advising so as best to support and advocate for her students and recent grads.
A native of Massachusetts, Katie earned her BA in English from Boston College and her MSW from Smith College School for Social Work in Northampton, MA. Her adventurous spirit brought her to Los Angeles, CA, where she lived for many years before moving to Northern Italy for a year with her family. (Her time in Italy only reinforced her love of pizza, pasta, and really good coffee!) After spending a few years in Oklahoma City, Katie is now happy to call Northfield, MN, home, where she lives with her husband and young daughter. She enjoys exploring all that Minnesota has to offer and, in true Minnesota style, hopes to one day own a cabin up north.
