Courtney Humm is an instructor in the Education department and the Director of Social Studies Education. Since joining the faculty in 2017, Courtney has taught Counseling and Communication in the Schools, Hindsight is 2020: Lessons in Teaching and Learning (a first-year seminar course), Foundations of Education, Principles of Education, Social Studies Perspectives and has led the Schools and Urban Communities in Minneapolis/St. Paul annually. Prior to joining the St. Olaf faculty, she taught social studies for ten years at Woodstock International School in Mussoorie, India and Community of Peace Academy in St. Paul, Minnesota. Courtney earned a B.A. in Social Studies Education from St. Olaf College and an M.Ed. in Learning and Teaching from Harvard Graduate School of Education. Her areas of interest include educational equity, culturally responsive-sustaining and anti-racist pedagogy, the creation of community in the classroom and civic education. When not on the Hill, Courtney enjoys running, playing Wordle, reading and spending time with friends and family, especially her spouse (also an Ole) and three young kids.
