Janet Hanson has served as vice president and chief financial officer since 2014. She oversees the development and implementation of the college’s operating and capital budgets; the preparation and publication of the college’s annual financial statements and other legal documents; the management of the college’s investment portfolio; and the planning and management of the college’s business affairs. Her supervisory portfolio includes the business office, budget and auxiliary services, environmental health and safety, and facilities.

Prior to her appointment at St. Olaf, Jan served for 14 years as vice president for administration and finance at the University of Wisconsin-Superior, where she coordinated over $200 million in physical plant additions and renovations. She has extensive budget and financial management systems experience as well, developed through innovation and implementation projects at the University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh, the University of Minnesota, Johns Hopkins University, and the State of New Mexico. 

Under Jan’s leadership, St. Olaf faculty and staff completed a comprehensive review of the college’s administrative and instructional programs and implemented a variety of strategic changes intended to enhance both current and long-term operations. Jan also led the development of a Facilities Framework Plan to enhance and sustain the college’s physical infrastructure for the next 20 years. To date, she has overseen renovations and upgrades in a wide variety of academic and residential buildings, including Holland Hall, Steensland Hall, Regents Hall of Natural and Mathematical Sciences, Christiansen Hall of Music, Rand Hall, Kildahl Hall, and Larson Hall. She has also overseen the construction of a new ice arena, a 300-bed residence hall, and a 140-bed townhome complex. 

Jan completed a B.B.A. in accounting at the University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh, and an M.S. in educational administration from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
