Area: Division operations and leadership
A native of White Bear Lake, Minnesota, Michael graduated from St. Olaf in 1985 with a political science major. Involved with student government and residence life as a student, Michael was committed to the college’s identity and mission and wanted to work at St. Olaf.
He worked in admissions and financial aid for 10 years. After three years in alumni relations at St. Paul Academy and Summit School, he returned to St. Olaf as a gift officer in the Advancement Office.
Michael took over leadership of the Enrollment Division in 2004. As vice president for enrollment and college relations, Michael works to ensure that the admissions team has the direction and resources to advance the division’s strategic priorities. He oversees Admissions, Financial Aid, Marketing and Communications, Broadcast/Media Services, Music Organizations, and Special Events.
He has served on planning committees for the renovations of Boe Chapel and Tomson Hall and was on the steering committee for the Main Street Initiative (which led to the formation of the Piper Center for Vocation and Career). He also co-produced 100 Years: The St. Olaf Choir in Norway, a documentary film about the St. Olaf Choir’s 2013 tour that retraced the path of the ensemble's first international tour.
Favorite spot on the Hill: the top floor of Regents Hall of Natural and Mathematical Sciences — “it reflects a tremendous commitment to the sciences and an ecologically sustainable academic environment, and the sweeping views of campus and the surrounding community represent St. Olaf’s traits of curiosity, wonder, and a broad view of the world around us.”
