Kaia Preus '13 is the Graduate/Professional School and Personal Statement Writing Coach at the Piper Center. She also coaches students interested in pursuing Education (licensure and non-licensure). She holds her MFA in Creative Writing from Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia, and was a 2019 Author Fellow at the Martha's Vineyard Institute of Creative Writing. Kaia teaches at the collegiate level and also taught high school for five years. She frequently teaches adult and youth writing courses at The Loft in downtown Minneapolis.

Kaia is the author of The War Requiem (Essay Press, 2020), a multi-genre book that was a 2021 finalist for the Minnesota Book Award and winner of the Essay Press/University of Washington at Bothell MFA in Creative Writing & Poetics Book Contest. She has given readings and lectures at colleges and bookstores, and has published a number of short stories and essays in nationally recognized literary journals. 

In her free time, Kaia enjoys hanging out in the backyard with her rescue dog, Cleo, and her partner, Michael, whom she met while they were both students on St. Olaf's Global Semester.
