Trained to analyze English literature of the 1500s and 1600s, Nancy Simpson-Younger researches embodied ethics and historical ways of safeguarding others in vulnerable states. This work led to publications about preserving the safety of sleepers and medical patients in the writings of Shakespeare and his contemporaries. More recently, this interest has led her to design classes in English, First-Year Writing, Gender and Sexuality Studies, and Public Health that emphasize not only ethics and history but the integration of theory and practice in the service of others. My classes have made quilts for Lutheran World Relief, studied doctor-patient interactions, examined power dynamics through close-reading, and rolled bandages to be sent to hospitals around the world.
