A Tribute to Ferg

04-FergHymnFest-224As we prepare for Ferg's AGO hymn festival at St. Olaf College on April 27th, we reflect on his influence within the organ community over the years. Andy, a senior at St. Olaf College, writes:

I first got to know Ferg while interning for the 2016 St. Olaf Conference on Worship, Theology, and the Arts. During several meetings leading up to the conference, he was excited to learn I was an organ student with a particular interest in hymnody. What began with a few subsequent coaching sessions has turned into a treasured friendship. As an undergraduate about to begin my career in church music, it has been an invaluable experience to get to develop this sort of relationship with one of the leading church musicians of the era. I have deeply valued our conversations on matters such as the role of music in the liturgy, organ registration, various theological ideas, and of course, cars!

One of the traits I greatly admire about Ferg is that though he is firm in his beliefs, he is open to new ideas. Many of our conversations begin with him asking, “so, what’s your opinion on…” or “what do you think about this idea?” As a student, it’s a great honor when someone at the top of the field is genuinely interested in and takes stock of your own opinions on such subjects. I am grateful for Ferg’s mentorship and friendship, and look forward, as a member of the St. Olaf Cantorei, to be a part of the festivities that will honor the lifework of this dedicated servant of the church.
