ENGL 280B (2018-2019, Fall) Topics in Genre

This course examines the influence of the Gothic tradition over the last two centuries. We will begin with a study of the origins of the genre in the novels of Walpole, Shelley, and Austen before moving to Poe’s America. Then, in fiction by Flannery O’Connor, Toni Morrison, and Ahmed Saadawi, as well as Gothic film, we will investigate why the genre has maintained its hold on modern and contemporary imaginations.
