DAVID H. KOCH THEATER, Lincoln Center, New York, NY Renovation Project
The David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts
completed a $107 million renovation of both public and backstage spaces.
These renovations make the orchestra pit larger and more flexible, with
a new state-of-the-art stage lighting system, improved rigging capability, improved acoustics, new theatre seating, enhanced public amenities in the front of house areas, and refurbish performer dressingrooms.
In the fall of 2007, Schuler Shook Theatre Planners led a full design team of architects and engineers to complete a conceptual design study in only nine weeks, an exceptional feat when considering the technical complexity of the project and the multiple constituent groups who had a variety of needs to be provided by the building. This study identified all of the potential areas for improvement and calculated an anticipated project cost for each area.
The renovation work was accomplished over an 18 month period, with construction crews working around the rehearsal and performance activities of the constituent groups. The theatre opened on November 5, 2009, with a gala celebration titled, "American Voices."
The entire schedule, from project inception to completion, was only 24 months, an incredibly short period of time for such a complex renovation.
