Falcons nip men's hockey in third period 3-1

Coming into the UW-River Falls game on Saturday night, the Oles were riding a three game winning streak. The St. Olaf men hoped they could pull off another road win against the number four ranked team in the country. The Oles remembered the success last year, when they outscored the Falcons 3-2 on Falcon ice, which led to a lower ranking in the national polls.

Due to injuries, the Oles started some young players on the blue line. Defensemen Joe Levit (FY, Tonka Bay, Minnesota) and Thaddeus Thaler (FY, Madison, Wisconsin) played great given the difficulty of the situation.

The game was scoreless going into the second period when River Falls exploded for three goals in 13 minutes. One of the goals came on the power play, while the other two were great individual efforts on the Falcons behalf.

The Oles would get on the board midway through the third period. Defensemen Mike Jewison (Jr., St. Paul, Minnesota) slipped through the slot and took a pass from Townsend and fired it five hole on the still moving goalie. That would be the Oles only goal and the game would 3-1.

Garret Hasti (Jr, St. Louis Park, Minnesota) got the start for the Oles in net and made 37 saves in the game.

It was a good weekend for the Oles, going 1-1 as they put up a great fight against a team that ranked fourth in Division 3 hockey. The St. Olaf men begin their conference play this Friday night against Bethel College in St. Paul. The Oles host Bethel College Saturday and look forward to keeping their 5-1 winning streak at home alive.
