Santurri examines 'just war' theory, moral evaluation of terrorism
JANUARY 31, 2003 — Professor of Religion Edmund Santurri, who directs The Great Conversation program at St. Olaf College, has published "Philosophical Ambiguities in Ostensibly Unambiguous Times: The Moral Evaluation of Terrorism" in Journal of Peace & Justice Studies, 12:2 (2002). Santurri says these arguments are unconvincing, that the moral condemnation of terrorism stands but that the distribution of responsibility for particular terrorist acts is "an enormously complex matter -- when the terrorist has a just grievance." An earlier version of this essay was delivered at the college as the Mellby Lecture in April 2002.
