Superior women hold off Oles

The UW-Superior women' s hockey team held off St. Olaf 3-2 in a non-conference contest Fri., Jan. 3 in . Lindsay Weier (Fr, Menomonie, Wis.) and Kate Barnett (So, Burnsville, Minn.) scored goals for the Oles.

At 16:06 in the first period, St. Olaf took the lead with a power play goal by Lindsay Weier (Fr, Menomonie, Wis.) with the assists from Kate Barnett (So, Burnsville, Minn.) and Sarah Ray (Jr, St. Paul, Minn.). At 5:09 of the second period, Superior tied the game with a power play goal. However, St. Olaf had great efforts on its penalty kills and power play opportunities in the second period. At 11:43, Barnett scored on a power play to give the Oles 2-1 advantage. Weier and Erin Baxter (So, Rosemount, Minn.) were awarded the assists. The Oles stepped it up offensively in the third period putting a total of 13 shots on goal. However, the Yellow Jackets scored on a penalty shot at 14:55, tying the game 2-2. At 18:43, Superior scored again taking the lead.

In the last few minutes the Oles tried to score a tying goal, pulling goaltender Kerry Rollwagen (So, Mendota Heights, Minn.). Unfortunately the Oles could not get the tying goal and the final score was 3-2, Superior. The Oles had a total of 30 shots of goal for the game. Rollwagen stopped 28 Superior shots. Other key efforts in this game were put forth by Weier and Barnett. The Oles play the Yellow Jackets again on Saturday, January 4, at 11am at the Faribault Ice Arena.
