The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) had three members finish in the top 50 of the Sears Directors Cup in final fall standings. St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn. led the MIAC placing 30th out of 395 eligible Division III institutions with 118 points. The University of St. Thomas finished in 33rd place with 111 points, followed by Saint John's University in 48th place with 83. The standings include the sports of women and men's cross country, field hockey, football, women and men's soccer and women's volleyball. St. Olaf recorded national finishes in three sports, including, women's cross country (19th, 36 points), men's cross country (21st, 32 points), and volleyball (17th, 50 points).

The Sears Cup format rewards institutions for their best men's and women's team finishes in NCAA championship events each school year. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 18 sports -- nine women's and nine men's. The format tries to recognize institutions for their ability to compete well on a national level in several sports during the same school year. The Sears Cup is the only all-sports competition that recognizes the institutions with the best overall athletics program.

The Sears Directors Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. It is administered by NACDA and sponsored by Sears, Roebuck and Company.
