Three members of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) finished in the top 50 of the national Sears Directors Cup in final fall standings -- including St. Olaf College, which led the MIAC group with 118 points, placing 30th out of 395 eligible Division III institutions. The standings include football, field hockey, women and men's cross country, women's volleyball, and women and men's soccer. St. Olaf recorded national finishes in three sports, including women's cross country (19th, 36 points), men's cross country (21st, 32 points) and volleyball (17th, 50 points). The University of St. Thomas in St. Paul finished in 33rd place, with 111 points, followed by Saint John's University in Collegeville in 48th place with 83 points.

The Sears Cup rewards institutions for their best team finishes in NCAA championship events each school year. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 18 sports: nine women's and nine men's sports. The format recognizes institutions for their ability to compete well on a national level in several sports during the same school year. The Sears Cup is the only all-sports competition that recognizes the institutions with the best overall athletics program.

The Sears Directors Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. It is administered by NACDA and sponsored by Sears, Roebuck and Co.
