St. Olaf opened game one of a two game weekend series with the Bethel Royals at Columbia Arena on Friday, January 10th. The Oles played hard and came away with a 4-1 victory in MIAC conference action.

The Oles jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead when Joel Ihrie (FY, Woodinville, Wash.) scored on a power play. Nathan Espiritu (FY, West Hills, Calif.) and Keith Townsend (Soph., Sterling Heights, MI) were credited with the assists. The remainder of the period saw both teams play shorthanded and four-on-four due to penalties.

Three minutes into the second period Bethel got their only goal of the game, slipping the puck past St. Olaf goalie Garret Hasti (Jr., St. Louis Park, MN.). St. Olaf answered with an immediate goal, skating the puck the length of the ice and lifting it over the Bethel goalie.

The Oles kept the 2-1 lead until Junior Dan Norsten (Eagan, MN.) fired one from the slot low on the goalie. Catching a pass from Nick Hanson (Sr., Eden Prairie, MN),just minutes into the third period, Norsten ripped a shot past the goalie giving the Oles a two-goal lead.

Sophomore Pat Gilles (Madison, WI.) scored the fourth goal for the Oles, with eight seconds remaining in the game.

First Year Dan Kehler (Woodbury, MN.) took over for starting goalie Hasti and saved all 12 shots on goal.

The Oles host Bethel College in Northfield on Saturday, January 11th at 8:00 p.m.
