Oles compete in Cornell Invite

The St Olaf wrestling team traveled to Iowa January 10-11 to compete in the two-day Cornell Matman Invitational. The Oles competed against nine other teams for top spots in each weight class. St Olaf finished 8th overall with 33 team points.

Alex Morf (Sr, Mt. Vernon, Iowa), Jason Moore (FY, Brooklyn Center, Minn.), and Skipp Sandberg (FY, Northfield, Minn.) placed at the ten-team tournament.

Morf placed fourth at 141 pounds. Morf defeated Clay Eaton (Central) by injury default in 2:39 and Craig Jentz (UW-Platteville) 11-1. After getting pinned by Nick Cole (Coe) in 5:26, he beat Nick Benvenuto (UW-Platteville) 11-3. However, Morf forfeited the third place match against Jeff Wiele (Coe) due to medical default. Morf scored nearly half of the team points for the Oles with 16.

Moore placed sixth at 165 pounds. He defeated Bryan Llewellyn (Central) 4-3 and Joe Vogel (Loras) 15-5. Moore was pinned by Matt Zwaschka (UW-La Crosse) 3:41 and Brad Bishop (Loras) 1:34. Moore forfeited the fifth place match due to medical default.

Sandberg placed sixth at 174 pounds. He defeated Shaun Ferrie (Coe) 12-8. After losing to Troy Seubert (UW-Eau Claire) 9-3, Sandberg pinned both Josh Swafford (Loras) 2:33 and Peter Moe (UW-Platteville) 1:47. However, Sandber lost to Phil Porter (Coe) 8-0 and forfeited the fifth place match due to medical default.

Next up, the Oles travel to St John's University for the Terry Haws Duals Saturday, Jan 18, 10:00 am.
