Ole win at Augsburg earns team first ever sweep in women's hockey

On Saturday, January 18, the Oles played game two of the series with the Augsburg Auggies at Augsburg College. Erin Baxter (So, Rosemount, Minn.) set a school record with her five points in one game - 1 goal and 4 assists. The Oles played a tough game and the 5-4 victory earned the team their first sweep in Oles Women?s hockey history.

The Oles got off to an early lead at 6:16 in the first. Jennifer Welch (Fr, Bloomington, Minn.) scored with the assist from Erin Baxter (So, Rosemount, Minn.). The Auggies answered back at 8:34 with a goal of their own. The Oles kept putting shots on goal for a total of 12 for the first period. And as the period wound down, the Oles finished the period with another goal at 19:15. Welch scored her second goal of the game with the assists from Baxter and Britney Schultheis (So, Shoreview, Minn.).

The Oles started the second period with a one-goal lead. However, the Auggies tied the score at 6:12. Near the end of the second period, the Oles gained a 5 on 3 power play advantage and converted it into a goal at 17:03. Lindsay Weier (Fr, Menomonie, Wis.) scored with the assist from Baxter. The Oles had a total of 11 shots on goal for the second period.

The third period began with the Oles up 3-2. The Auggies were first to score in the third period to tie the score at 3-3 at 11:03. However, the Oles answered back at 14:19 when Baxter scored with the assist from Kirsten Paulson (Fr, Moorhead, Minn.). At 14:56, the Auggies tied the game again at 4-4. The Oles answered back at 17:00, as Weier scored off of Baxter?s assist to give the Oles the win. During the final 3 minutes of the game, the Oles put forth a tremendous defensive effort to preserve their lead. Ole goaltender, Andrea Smith (So, Burnsville, Minn.) had huge saves, keeping the Oles ahead.

The Oles will next face the Gusties of Gustavus-Adolphus College on Friday, January 24 at 5pm at the Northfield Ice Arena.
