January 22, 2003

The St. Olaf Women's Track and Field team began the competitive season this past weekend as they traveled to the University of Wisconsin River Falls for the Falcon Early Bird Invitational. Taking a very young squad, the Oles were eager to see where the season would start. True to St. Olaf fashion, the Oles stepped up their performances and proved that this will be an excellent season.

Lead in the field events by senior co-captains Leah Dvorak (Sr., Elma, Iowa) and Emily Uzzell (Sr., Norfolk, Neb.), the Oles proved that the depth of the field events is improving. Dvorak competed in both the long jump and high jump, showing that she will remain a MIAC competitor. Uzzell finished 7th in the shot put and 5th in the weight throw. The many other field event competitors earned marks in their respective events, proving that practice will only make them better and more competitive.

On the track, the Oles were lead by senior co-captain Megan Daymont (Northfield, Minn.). Daymont finished first in the 600-meter race and first in the 1,500-meter race. Teammates Kari Koos (FY, Leavenworth, Wash.) and Becca Trombley (FY, Eau Claire, Wis.) finished 2nd and 7th, respectively, in the 600-meter race.

First Years Kezia Manlove (FY, Rapid City, S.D) and Jenna Barke (FY, Roseville, Minn.) finished 2nd and 5th in the 800-meter race. Larissa Nordstrom (FY, Des Moines, Iowa), Diana Ostrokoski (FY, Eureka, S.D), Liz Ball (So., Aurora, Ill.), Breanna Greenfield (FY, Oakdale, Minn.), and Kate Giorgi (FY, Overland Park, Kan.) finished the 1,000-meter race in 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 8th places, respectively. Manlove also finished in 7th place in the 1,500-meter race. Lindsay Boetcher (FY, Eau Claire, Wis.) and Sarah Anderson (FY, North Oaks, Minn.) went 5th and 8th in the 3,000-meter race. Brenna Bray (FY, Stillwater, Minn.), Meredith Fahrner (So., Urbana, Ill.), and Kris Hup (Jr., Waseca, Minn.) finished 5th, 7th, and 8th in the 5,000-meter race.

First Year Emily Peterson (Wilmette, Ill.) finished in 7th place in the 55-meter hurdles. The Oles 4x200 relay team took 1st and 2nd, respectively. The 4x400 meter team finished in 2nd, with Daymont, Manlove, Trombley, and Koos running. The DMR relay also finished in 1st and 3rd places.

With a successful first meet under the Oles belt, look for vast improvements as the Oles host their first meet in the new Tostrud Fieldhouse this Friday, January 24th, at 5:30 pm.
