Swimmers and divers split one with Huskies

The St. Olaf men?s swimming and diving team cruised by St. Cloud University this past Saturday, January 19th, while the Ole women took part in a nail biter before losing a close one to the Huskies. The winning score for the Ole men was 147.5 to 83.5. The Ole women ended with 106 points vs. the Huskies 137.

Although the women were unable to overcome the talent of the St. Cloud team, coach Dave Hauck was impressed with the team?s effort. ?We have been training extremely hard lately, and the women recognized that they were up against a Division II team and were determined to swim at that level, and that?s what they did. They competed with a lot of intensity in every event and as a result, turned in many great times.?

The Ole women showed the Huskies they were in for battle right from beginning of the event. Carly Knoell (FY, Lincoln, Neb.), Anna Guenther (SR, Minneapolis, Minn.), Katie Detwiler (SO, Fort Atkinson, Wisc.), and Emily Love (FY, Kansas City, Mo.) teamed up to win the 400-yard medley relay with a season best time of 4:07.53. They Oles were without their top swimmer Kate Blum (FY, Marshalltown, Iowa) who was out sick. Fortunately Love stepped up to the challenge and swam a great anchor leg for the women. Knoell and Detwiler both went on the capture individual wins. Detwiler won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:16.97 and was also second in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2: 16.93. Knoell easily won the 200-yard backstroke when she turned in a time of 2:13.49, which was over six seconds faster then the runner up from St. Cloud. Collin Cunningham (SO, University Place, Wash.) also turned in win for the Oles. Cunningham won the voluntary portion of the 1-meter diving competition with a score 168.15.

Although the Oles only had three individual wins their depth allowed them too keep the score close throughout the entire meet. In many of the events the Husky women captured, the Oles filled in the second, third and fourth positions. In addition, the high level of competition against the Huskies, the Oles turned in some outstanding performances. Lauren Haugen (FY, Faribault, Minn.) impressed everyone with her time in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing third with a season best time of 2:02.90. Laura Schutt (SR, Niles, Ill.) also took advantage of the competition and went under the 11:00 minute mark in the 1000-yard freestyle for the first time this season. Schutt finished a close second with a time of 10:58.99. Guenther also had a successful day for the Oles, finishing second in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:31.24, and had an even more impressive performance in her leg of the winning 400-yard medley relay. Guenther split a 1:07.67 in the 100, which is only tenths off her lifetime best.

The men did not encounter the same level of talent from the St. Cloud men as the women did, but still remained very competitive. The Ole men dominated over the Huskies winning 11 out of the 13 events. Like the women, the men started the meet by winning the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:40.85. BJ Brent (SR, Ankeny, Iowa) Grant VanLishout (SR, Reedsville, Wisc.), Adam Garrett (JR, Cannon Falls, Minn.) and Drew Vanderwert (SO, Minneapolis, Minn.) combined their efforts to take on the Huskies in what turned out to be a very exciting event. The teams went head to head throughout the entire race until the last length when Vanderwert pulled ahead and touched the wall first. Mark Glineburg (FY, St. Paul, Minn.) and Lee Thomsen (JR, El Cajon, Calif.) were both double winners for the men. Glineburg came from behind in the final yards of the 1000-yard freestyle to win with a time of 10:03. 59. Glineburg then went on to win the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:59. 83. Glineburg also placed second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:59.13. Glineburg?s ability to adapt to swimming these three very demanding events in one meet is impressive. Glineburg has definitely captured the art of this as the season has progressed. Thomsen led the Ole men in the freestyle events with wins in the 200 and 100-yard freestyles with time of 1:48.52 and 48.70, respectively. Both of these times are the fastest on the Ole team this season. Brad Worms (SO, Cohasset, Minn.) was another double winner on Saturday winning both the voluntary and optional parts of the 1-meter diving competition, with scores of 133.20 and 115.60, respectively.

Other individual victories from the men came from Garrett in the 200-yard butterfly, Anthony Blum (JR, Marshalltown, Iowa) in the 50-yard freestyle, and VanLishout in the 200-yard breaststroke. Garrett?s final time in the butterfly was 2:04. 79 while Blum clocked in at 22.44 in the 50. VanLishout won the breaststroke with a time of 2:18.22. The men finished the meet in the same fashion in which the meet began with an exciting win in the 400-yard freestyle relay. This time around Thomsen, Blum, JC Chambers (FY, Englewood, Colo.) and Vanderwert teamed up to fend off the Husky team. They finished with a time of 3:17.14, which was only 2 tenths ahead of the Huskies.

The men and women will leave this Thursday to travel to Stevens Point, Wisconsin to participate in the "Get to the Point Invite." The meet will take place on Friday and Saturday, January 24th and 25th, with preliminary swims in the morning and finals in the evening.
